Green Transport. Real Impact.
At its core, the Kigali Urban Cable Car Project is a climate action initiative designed to support Rwanda’s ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Cable cars offer one of the lowest carbon footprints of any mass transit system. Powered by electricity and able to climb steep terrain with minimal land use, they deliver fast, reliable, and accessible transport while reducing congestion, noise, and emissions.
Our Sustainability Commitments
- Cutting greenhouse gases by replacing thousands of fossil-fuel-based trips daily
- Training Rwandan youth in green jobs, operations, and maintenance
- Inclusive design to ensure accessibility for women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities
- Tourism and community uplift by connecting cultural, business, and sports hubs
- Technology transfer through partnerships that build lasting local expertise
Environmental Benefits
- Carbon Reduction: Cable cars cut fuel-based trips by thousands daily, significantly lowering COâ‚‚ emissions
- Low Land Use: Unlike roads and railways, cable cars require very little ground space, protecting natural habitats and minimizing displacement
- Quiet, Electric Operation: Reduces noise and air pollution in busy city areas
Social Benefits
- Inclusive Mobility: The system is designed with universal access in mind — elevators, level boarding, and priority for people with disabilities, the elderly, women, and children
- Affordable Transport: Ticketing will be integrated with Kigali’s public bus system to ensure fair and accessible fares for all
- Community Connectivity: Lines are planned to link high-density neighbourhoods, business hubs, and cultural centers, ensuring both social and economic impact
Economic Benefits
- Youth Employment: Training and hiring of local engineers, operators, and technicians in ropeway systems
- Tourism Growth: Unique aerial views and fast access to Kigali’s landmarks will enhance the city’s reputation as a global destination
- Technology Transfer: Partnerships with global leaders like Doppelmayr ensure local talent gains hands-on expertise in cutting-edge mobility solutions
Long-Term Commitment
RTRL is committed to monitoring the project’s impact through sustainability reporting, passenger feedback, and carbon reduction tracking. For Kigali, this is more than infrastructure: it’s a pathway to a cleaner, smarter, and more inclusive urban future.
