The Kigali Urban Cable Car Project
The Kigali Urban Cable Car Project is Rwanda’s first large-scale aerial ropeway transit system, and the first of its kind in Africa.
Designed to ease congestion, cut emissions, and connect people across the city’s hills and valleys, the project is more than transport: it is a catalyst for green growth, youth employment, and urban innovation.
Awarded under a Public-Private Partnership
Awarded under a Public-Private Partnership with the Government of Rwanda, Ropeways Transit Rwanda Limited (RTRL) will deliver three priority lines, starting with Phase 1: the Kigali Convention Center – Kigali Sports City loop and the Nyabugogo – CBD line.
Together, these routes will connect major hubs for business, education, sports, and tourism, with the capacity to move 5,000 passengers per hour, per direction — the equivalent of 100 buses or 2,000 cars.
With technical expertise from Doppelmayr
With technical expertise from Doppelmayr, the world’s leading cable car manufacturer, and financial support from the African Development Bank, the Kigali Urban Cable Car Project will showcase Rwanda’s leadership in sustainable mobility and smart city development.

Why Cable Cars for Kigali?

Kigali is one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa, with a population expected to double by 2050. Its rolling hills, dense neighbourhoods, and narrow road network mean that traditional transport expansion is costly and limited. Cable cars, however, can:

Glide easily over steep terrain

Carry thousands of passengers per hour

Phase 1: Building the Backbone

The Government of Rwanda has awarded Ropeways Transit Rwanda Limited (RTRL) the concession to design, finance, build, and operate the city’s first two cable car lines:

Nyabugogo – CBD Line:

Linking the city’s busiest transit hub with the central business district

Convention Centre – Kigali Sports City Loop:

Connecting key venues for business, sports, and tourism

Together, these lines will move up to 5,000 passengers per hour in each direction, reducing commute times, easing congestion, and cutting emissions from thousands of daily car trips.

A First for Africa

Once completed, the Kigali Urban Cable Car Project will be the largest ropeway transit system on the continent, setting a precedent for other African cities looking to modernize their transport systems. Backed by the African Development Bank, international DFIs, and global ropeway leader Doppelmayr, this project represents Rwanda’s role as a pioneer in sustainable urban innovation.
